2021 Travel - Year in Review

In 2020 restaurants and retail stores were closed, office workers, where possible, were sent to work from home.  Businesses closed, many, many people lost jobs. Supply chains dried up and people hoarded toilet paper.  Here we are 21 months later and some businesses have never re-opened, many people are still out of work, ships sit outside our ports waiting to unload the things we think we need.  And many, many people have died.

I think people in general were naïve about the effects of COVID-19 and how long those effects would last.  My husband and I are both under the age of 65 and in good health.  We have been very fortunate to not have become sick and do not know of anyone in our family or among our friends who have.  We are fully vaccinated and plan to get our booster shots as soon as we are able.  We continue to wear masks in stores and whenever we are in close quarters with the public.  It's the safe thing to do.  It's the RIGHT thing to do. With some travel restrictions still in place and not wanting to enter an airplane (germ tube) my husband and I opted for car travel.

                                                      ....................................................

We drove from the Upstate of South Carolina to Scottsdale, AZ in May to join the Porsche Spring Treffen at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa.  This is no high-rise hotel.  This hotel is a sprawling resort with single story bungalows called Casitas.  We were never crowded into small spaces and most meals were taken out of doors. We had time before we arrived in Scottsdale to stop at the Petrified Forest.

I'd visited family in Arizona but never explored any of the country really so this an opportunity to see lots of new things.

We took several drives over the four days we were there from Scottsdale up through Carefree, Prescott, Village of Oak Creek, Sedona and Flagstaff.

Some really beautiful country out there but, dang it was HOT!  Even the residents said it was 'a bit warm' for the first week in May.  Sorry but I don't care if it is a dry heat, 105F is 105F and it's too freaking hot!!  Actually it was only that hot the very first day we were there.  We were able to enjoy the drives and scenery with the top open.

On the way home we stopped in Winslow, AZ because, well you just have to!

We had lunch and walked the few blocks of the main street, bought a t-shirt and were on our way.
                                                      ....................................................

Our next car trip event was the annual Porsche convention called Parade.  We joined the PCA when  Jeff bought his new Cayman in 2015 and have driven to and attended Parade in 2015 at French Lick, IN., 2016 in Jay Peak, VT., (skipped Spokane, WA. in 2017. A bit too long a drive especially with an elderly dog at home), 2018 was at Lake of the Ozarks, 2019 in Boca Raton, FL.  Palm Springs, CA 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19 and we were back in French Lick in 2021.  It is a beautiful hotel with lots of history, gorgeous mosaic floors and plastered ceilings and beautiful grounds.

PCA always has some amazing car wraps too ogle

There are lots of things to participate in (or not).  Jeff & my brother like to race RC Cars so they did that while my sister-in-law and I hung out, took photos of the boys and their toys and enjoyed the sunshine.
In their age group (over 50 LOL!) my brother (left) placed 3rd and Jeff took 1st AND Fastest Time of the Day.

PCA has a very competitive Concour event that Jeff has entered (and placed!) in several times.  We chose not to participate this year but did join in the gimmick rally that ended at a Drive-in-Movie theater in Mitchell, IN!   Le Mans starring Steve McQueen was a especially for us feature film that night.

So nostalgic, so fun!  What a great day!  (Twister anyone!?! LOL!)

We took a leisurely weekend at the Meadowbrook Inn, Blowing Rock, NC.  Drove parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We are so lucky and thankful to live in this beautiful area.
